Elle Magazine and some old friends

A couple of days ago I received my copy of October Elle Decor, as I was devouring every page, I came across an article about the new home of celebrity hair stylist Frederik Fekkai and his wife Shirin Von Wulffen.  I was curious about Shirin and wondering what her background was, I was surprised to find out she had lived in Iran during her childhood years, her parents are German and left Iran shortly after the revolution in 1979.  The story gets more interesting when she talks about Persian carpets her parents had purchased while living in Iran from the Yaraghi family.  The Yaraghi’s are old family friends of mine.  They also fled Iran after the revolution, moved to New York, and established Safavieh.  The antique carpets covering her home are from the exquisite Safavieh collection.  Antique Persian carpets are truly works of art and interior designer Robert Couturier has done a wonderful job using these beautiful carpets to anchor these rooms, as well as fusing Shirin’s aesthetic with Frederik s’, who grew up in the South of France.

I love the master bedroom, how the purple color of the bed picks up the colors of the antique carpet, and the embroidery on the headboard is gorgeous.

ASID Pasadena Home & Kitchen Tour

Pasadena Magazine

The September issue of Pasadena Magazine has published one of my projects, a featured home in the ASID Pasadena Chapter Home & Kitchen Tour. Thank you to everyone at Pasadena Magazine for featuring these homes. It’s a beautiful article that gives a sneak peek into this years tour. Four distinct homes are showcased, and I’m honored to be  included in the the company of three great, and talented designers.

This image is the back yard pool and cabana area. With Viking refrigerators, BBQ, and cook top, shimmering glass tiles on the back splash and in the pool, water falls, and a water slide, dragon flies wizing by, and Oak trees creating a cool shaded canopy for a hot summer afternoon.   It is truly a magical space.

The ASID Pasadena Chapter Home and Kitchen Tour is a self guided tour in it’s 24th year and is a well attended, popular event, in the Pasadena Community. Room of the Week – President Obama’s new Oval Office

This week The White House released pictures of the newly designed Oval office.  So there was no other room to blog about but this one

Rummer has it that the interior designer responsible is Michael Smith.

The most noticeable changes are the striped gold wall paper and new rug.  This office has a more comfortable, and casual and contemporary look, a little too monochromatic for my taste but a much needed face lift.    The new rug has the Presidential Seal and a border with five historical quotes that are meaningful to President Obama.

• “The Only Thing We Have to Fear is Fear Itself” – President Franklin D. Roosevelt
• “The Arc of the Moral Universe is Long, But it Bends Towards Justice” – Martin Luther King, Jr.
• “Government of the People, By the People, For the People” – President Abraham Lincoln
• “No Problem of Human Destiny is Beyond Human Beings” – President John F. Kennedy
• “The Welfare of Each of Us is Dependent Fundamentally Upon the Welfare of All of Us” – President Theodore Roosevelt

The art work on the wall has changed back to President Clinton’s office, the portrait of George Washington has remained over the fireplace mantel. The new sofas are much more contemporary, and the side chairs with new upholstery are recycled from President George W. Bush’s time in office and the drapes have not changed.  I like the modern Blue lamps by Christopher Spitzmiller and how that color is picked up in the pillows and on the rug, I also like the new coffee table.  The side tables are the same ones used during both President George W. Bush’s term and President Clinton’s time in office.

The Oval Office to me is not just were the President works, it is the room he meets and greets heads of state, foreign dignitaries, and leaders from around the world.  It should be a grand and gracious room, tasteful and stylish worthy of the President.

First Day of School

The second busiest shopping season of the year, after the holidays, is the Back to School.  Although I look forward to getting back to school and all of us getting back into the program, every year I cherish the last few days of summer with my kids, they are growing way too fast.  The start of the school year represents a few things to us, it’s a new beginning, we reorganize, set new goals, and get excited about what we hope will be an awesome school year.  One great way to start and finish the school year successfully is, to carve out and create an organized area for homework.  When my kids were younger, we liked to gather around the kitchen table and do homework together, now that my boys are teenagers it’s much different, they do homework in their rooms.  Here are some ideas on how to organize their space so you don’t have to deal with SCHOOL CLUTTER……

How about a little Blackboard paint to create this cool calendar in your kitchen or teenage boys room (ahhh here is a little inspiration)

If you have the spare room, maybe you can make it into a study for the kids like this picture below

This dinning room / study area, is great if you have a smaller space, it can also function as a home office, making good use out of your formal dinning room, or organize “the kitchen table” that me and my kids use to gather around and do homework on.

This Sunday The Emmy’s will be on, and I will be glued to the TV set to see what all my favorite TV stars will be wearing.  Maybe one of these dresses? I think J. Lo already wore this one to the Oscars, but it’s sooo pretty, I thought to post it anyway

Sunday at the flea market

Sunday I spent the day at the Santa Monica Antique and Collectible Market.  It was a beautiful day and the shopping was good.  Here are some of the things that caught my eye.

Love the turquoise dresser, turquoise is color of the yeas.  It’s in good condition, and the price is fair……..

I also love these old drapery rosettes, we can use them as hooks to hang bags, or towels from…or as knobs on the right piece of furniture……

What a great re-use of old outdoor furniture, some new cushions, and the rust adds so much character

Remember the old singles, my kids have never seen one

How about a game of golf or maybe tennis??

Here’s what I came home with

These small mother of pearl and French horn caviar spoons, they can be used for tea, sauces, salt not just caviar, but I might want to try them with caviar also

This Lovely silver box; it’s perfect for keeping small Hors d’oeuvre forks in and I can display it on my coffee table

There was so much to see and take home, can’t wait to go back next month……..

Doors, Door Knobs and Hardware

On my recent trip to Italy I was fascinated by door knobs.  I probably took 200 plus pictures of every door and door knob we came across.  I’m going to share one I liked in particular.  It has a rock n roll quality that I admire, a little edgy and different.  Very inspiring to me I hope to be able to inject a little bit of this in my creative design work.
